AMC returned to the 250 class in 1958 with this all-new overhead-valve single, shared with the Matchless G2. The oil tank was built into the crankcase so the engine looked like a unit-construction design, although it kept a separate gearbox, and it sat in a simple open tubular frame with a telescopic fork and swinging-arm rear end. Standard and sports versions were dropped by mid-1963, while the CSR super-sport model carried on until 1966; a scrambler variant used higher compression and closer gearing.
