The Model 16 grew from the wartime Matchless G3/L and became AJS's long-running everyday 350 single. It was valued as an economical, low-maintenance machine, gaining a dual seat in 1953, an alternator and alloy primary cover in 1957, and sprung rear suspension from 1949 on the S models. A competition 16C used a welded duplex frame and more ground clearance, and an export version was sold in America as the Sceptre with higher compression.
