The 650ie of 2001 marked the point where Aprilia's long-running Pegaso single switched from carburettors to electronic fuel injection. It kept the five-valve, twin-cam 652 cc engine, the 19/17-inch wheel pairing and a big 21-litre tank good for roughly 300 km, positioning it as a light road-biased adventure bike against the likes of the DR650 and KLR650. Testers liked its brakes, wind protection and unusually complete dash, but found the engine short of breath at high revs and the seat hard on longer days.
