The 500ie was the final evolution of the big Scarabeo, using Piaggio's fuel-injected 493 cc Master single in place of the earlier 460 cc unit. The bigger engine brought a little more torque low down but no real jump in peak power, so the appeal stayed comfortable, stable cruising on a 16-inch front wheel with a large windscreen and under-seat storage. It sat at the top of the Scarabeo range for riders who wanted retro looks with motorway ability.
