Launched in 1988, the 600 Wind was the big brother of the Tuareg family and Aprilia's answer to bikes such as the Honda Dominator, Yamaha Tenere and Cagiva Elefant. It used a 562 cc Rotax four-valve single with a balance shaft, good for about 46 hp, in a chassis that weighed under 150 kg dry. Contemporary tests found it comfortable, frugal and stable at speed on long gravel roads, though its tall seat and road-biased tyres limited it in serious off-road terrain.
