The APRC version was the better-equipped Tuono V4 R, adding Aprilia Performance Ride Control (eight-level traction control, wheelie control and launch control), the aQS clutchless quickshifter and a Sachs steering damper to the standard bike. The 2012 model was carried over from 2011 with new colours; Rider Magazine's test bike weighed 466 lb fuelled and averaged 27.1 mpg. It was pitched as a road-going superbike with handlebars rather than a comfort-oriented naked.
