The C1-E was BMW Motorrad's contribution to eSUM, a European urban motorcycle safety project run with cities such as Paris, Rome, Barcelona and London and with Piaggio. It revived the roofed C1 idea with a longer, lower body, a safety cell with a roll-over bar, an energy-absorbing nose and a rider seat belt, and swapped the petrol single for a city-oriented electric drive using Vectrix components and lithium-ion batteries. BMW said a clean combustion engine could also be fitted, but stated there were no production plans. No battery capacity, output or range figures were published.
