The F 650 Funduro was BMW's first single-cylinder bike since the 1960s and its first with chain drive, a lower-priced dual-purpose machine built by Aprilia in Italy around a Rotax 652 cc engine. BMW's version of the Pegaso-based design used a four-valve, liquid-cooled head, a plain-bearing crank and a gear-driven balancer. Launched in late 1993 for the 1994 season, it was aimed at new and returning riders, with suspension tuned more for the road than for serious off-road work.
