The F 650 GS arrived for 2000 as the replacement for the carburetted F 650 Funduro. BMW brought assembly in-house, fitted Bosch/BMW fuel injection and a catalytic converter, and moved the fuel tank under the seat to lower the centre of gravity. ABS was an option, which was unusual on a single-cylinder dual-sport at the time. A Dakar version with a 21-inch front wheel and longer suspension was sold alongside it.
