The Dakar arrived in spring 2000, roughly half a year after the fuel-injected F 650 GS it is based on, as BMW's showroom nod to its Paris-Dakar rally wins. It shares the 652 cc four-valve single but adds a 21-inch front wheel, 210 mm of travel at both ends, a taller seat and a higher screen. It was aimed at riders who wanted more genuine trail ability than the 19-inch-wheeled GS offered.
