The F 650 RR marked BMW's return to the Dakar with a works team after more than a decade, this time with a single-cylinder rally bike derived from the F 650 road enduro rather than the boxer twins of the 1980s. Its enlarged 678 cc single, chromoly frame with titanium subframe, long-travel WP suspension and four fuel tanks were built for desert stages. Richard Sainct won outright in 1999 and 2000, with BMW filling second to fourth in 2000, and the bike inspired the road-going F 650 GS Dakar.
