Launched in 1987 with the R 80 GS, the R 100 GS was the bigger, more road-biased GS: a 980 cc two-valve boxer with 60 hp, the new Paralever single-sided swingarm that tamed shaft-drive reactions, a long-travel fork and cross-spoke wheels that took tubeless tyres. Very capable on tarmac and on long overland trips but heavy in mud, it became one of the best-selling big trail bikes of its era.
