The R 100 GS of 1989-90 is the first-series big-bore GS, presented in late 1987 with the 980 cc boxer and BMW's Paralever rear end, which tamed the shaft-drive jacking of the earlier R 80 G/S. It paired a 21-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension with relaxed low-down torque, making it an approachable all-rounder that set the template for large adventure bikes.
