Launched in 1991, the R 100 R was BMW's first official retro roadster, built by putting the R 100 GS engine, main frame, Paralever swingarm and tank under classic naked styling. A new rear subframe, Showa suspension, an 18-inch front wheel and road tyres turned it into a road bike, and twin Brembo four-piston calipers gave it strong front brakes for a boxer. Testers liked its low-down torque and easy handling but criticised its odd controls and finish.
