For the 1978 model year the R 100 RS moved to cast-alloy "snowflake" wheels and gained a rear disc brake in place of the drum. The 70 hp engine and Pininfarina-shaped fairing were carried over, and the RS kept its place as BMW's top sports-tourer. Early cast wheels were later subject to a recall for breakage.
