The R 1100 GS replaced the two-valve R 100 GS and brought the new four-valve, fuel-injected oilhead boxer to BMW's big enduro, together with Telelever front and Paralever rear suspension. It was far more capable and comfortable on tarmac than its predecessor, trading some rough-terrain agility for touring range and stability, and its unusual beak-and-tank styling set the look for later GS models.
