The R 1100RS was the first of BMW's four-valve 'oilhead' boxers, and by 1997 it was a mature sport-tourer with fuel injection, Telelever front end and Paralever shaft drive. The half fairing, adjustable bars, seat and screen made it a capable long-distance machine rather than an outright sports bike. These late-1990s bikes carried on largely unchanged, with ABS widely fitted.
