The R 1100S was BMW's sportiest boxer of its time, using a higher-compression 98 hp version of the 1085 cc twin with a new six-speed gearbox. It had a cast aluminium front frame section with the engine as a stressed member, a single-sided Paralever with twin under-seat silencers and a compact half fairing with an ellipsoid headlight. It was aimed at riders wanting a sporty road bike rather than a tourer.
