The R 1200 GS replaced the R 1150 GS for 2004 with a new 1170 cc boxer that was the first in BMW's history to use a balance shaft. It was about 30 kg lighter than its predecessor and gained power and torque, setting the template for the big touring enduro class. Telelever and Paralever suspension, shaft drive and a 20-litre tank were carried into a slimmer, more modern package.
