In its second year the R 1200 GS carried on unchanged, with the balance-shafted 98 hp boxer, six-speed gearbox and shaft drive. Its low weight compared with the old 1150 and its smooth, torquey engine made it the benchmark adventure tourer. Optional extras such as ABS, heated grips and luggage let owners tailor it for long-distance travel.
