The R 18 marked BMW's return to the big cruiser class, styled after the 1936 R 5 with a teardrop tank, double-loop steel frame, exposed chrome driveshaft and a rear end that looks like a rigid frame but hides a cantilever shock. Its 1802 cc air/oil-cooled pushrod boxer is the largest BMW has built, tuned for 158 Nm at just 3000 rpm. Standard kit included three riding modes, traction control and engine drag control, with reverse assist and hill start control optional; a First Edition trim with chrome and pinstriping was offered at launch.
