The R 3 was a one-year 305 cc single that slotted between the R 2 and the R 4, using the same pressed-steel frame and leaf-spring front fork. With less power than the R 4 and none of the tax and licence advantages of the 200 cc R 2, it found few buyers. Only 740 were sold in 1936 before BMW replaced its singles with the new R 20 and R 35 generation.
