The R 60/5 was the 600 cc member of BMW's all-new /5 range, the first BMW motorcycles built in Berlin, with production starting in September 1969. It brought a new short-stroke 40 hp engine, telescopic forks, electric starting and 12-volt electrics, moving BMW away from its sombre sidecar image toward lighter, sportier touring. Early bikes carried the large 24-litre tank; many went to police forces, where the white bikes earned the nickname 'Weisse Maus'.
