Successor to the R 68 and the sporting model of BMW's 1955 'full swing' generation, which replaced the plunger frame with swinging arms at both ends: an Earles-type leading-link fork up front and a long rear swingarm housing the driveshaft. The 35 hp engine was tuned for smooth high-speed cruising, and period testers saw it as a refined luxury tourer. Its sidecar-ready frame and composure also made it popular with police forces.
