The R75/5 headed BMW's all-new /5 range, launched in 1969 and the first BMWs built at the Berlin-Spandau plant. It brought a lighter, sportier chassis with long-travel telescopic forks instead of the Earles fork, electric starting backed by a kickstarter, and BMW's first constant-depression Bing carburettors. The range aimed to win younger, sport-minded riders as motorcycling shifted from transport to leisure.
