The R 80/7 replaced the R 75/7 in 1977, taking the boxer to 797.5 cc with a larger bore and becoming BMW's mid-range touring twin. This entry covers the detuned low-compression version, which made 50 hp and was popular where insurance favoured lower outputs. Early bikes changed quickly: a second front disc became standard in 1978 and cast wheels and a sportier seat followed in 1979.
