The R 80 G/S launched BMW's large-capacity dual-purpose class in 1980, pairing the 800 cc boxer from the R 80/7 with an R65-derived frame, long-travel suspension and a 21-inch front wheel. Its headline novelty was the Monolever single-sided swingarm, which carried the drive shaft and made rear wheel removal quick. Testers found it light and quick on the road but only modestly capable on rough dirt.
