The 1983 R 80 G/S continued essentially unchanged, while BMW's competition boxers took a second Dakar victory with Hubert Auriol. It kept the 50 hp 800 cc twin, Monolever rear end and 19.5-litre tank of the original. Its blend of comfort, range and light off-road ability was by now creating a new touring-enduro market.
