These were the competition boxers that BMW and the German specialist HPN built around the R 80 G/S for the Paris-Dakar rally, with long-travel suspension, huge fuel tanks and progressively larger engines. Hubert Auriol gave BMW its first Dakar win in 1981 and repeated it in 1983, and Gaston Rahier followed in 1984 and 1985, results that made the G/S name. HPN also built the 980 cc GS980R that took class honours in the 1985 Baja 1000.
