Before the R 80 G/S reached showrooms, BMW's testing department built off-road boxer prototypes as an unofficial project, largely from existing parts: an R 80/7 engine, an R65-based frame and borrowed forks and wheels. Engineer Laszlo Peres raced a self-built 800 cc enduro with success in German competition, which helped convince management in 1979 to approve a production dual-purpose model.
