The third-generation S 1000 R is based on the 2019 S 1000 RR. It uses that bike's engine (without ShiftCam), a slimmer and lighter aluminium frame and a new 45 mm fork. Output stayed at 165 hp, but the bike lost several kilograms, gained a 6.5-inch TFT dash and dropped the old asymmetric headlight for a single LED unit. The Sport and M packages add items such as DDC semi-active damping, a lightweight battery and forged or carbon wheels.
