For 2012 BMW gave the S 1000 RR its first meaningful update without touching peak power. The wheelbase was shortened by about 9 mm, trail grew to 98.5 mm, the swingarm pivot was raised and a 10-way mechanical steering damper was fitted, while the fork and shock gained revised internals. A one-tooth-larger rear sprocket sharpened acceleration, the throttle maps were reworked for smoother mid-range response, and a leaner tail and redesigned side panels freshened the look.
