The 1098R was Ducati's homologation superbike for World Superbike racing, enlarged to 1198 cc with titanium rods and valves, sand-cast cases and a lighter crank. It was sold single-seat only, with Öhlins suspension, Brembo Monobloc brakes and forged wheels. An optional track-only race kit with a dedicated ECU unlocked more power and Ducati Traction Control.
