The 749R was the limited, track-focused top version of the 749, with a bigger-bore, shorter-stroke 749.5 cc Testastretta that revs higher than the standard engine. It used titanium, magnesium and carbon fibre to save weight, plus Öhlins suspension and radial brakes, and each bike carried a numbered plate. It remained road legal despite its racing intent.
