The first road-going 851 was Ducati's debut liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, eight-valve desmodromic superbike, built in small numbers to homologate the racer. With 16-inch wheels and Marzocchi suspension it won praise for its torque but was criticised for nervous handling, which prompted the move to 17-inch wheels for the next series.
