The 916 SPS (Sport Production Special) was built to homologate a 996 cc engine for Superbike racing, using bigger 98 mm bores, stronger crankcases and new cams. It also gained a close-ratio gearbox, Öhlins rear shock and uprated brakes, and made roughly 123 hp with much better torque. Reviewers called it the strongest, most desirable 916-family Ducati of its day, though it idles and runs poorly at low speed.
