The 996R was a homologation special built to let Ducati's World Superbike team race the new Testastretta engine, with 500 produced in 2001. The narrow-valve-angle engine, titanium con-rods, full Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes, Marchesini wheels and carbon bodywork made it far more race-bred than other 996s. Troy Bayliss won the 2001 World Superbike title on the racing version. On the road it is fast and stable but hot, heavy-clutched and best suited to track use.
