The 996S was the mid-range 996 in 2001, the last year of the 996 line, positioned between the standard Biposto and the limited 996R. It combined the higher-output 123 hp engine from the SPS with Öhlins suspension and the usual 996 chassis. It offered most of the sporting character of the SPS in a more road-oriented package.
