The 996 SPS was the sporting, Europe-focused version of the 996, sitting above the standard bike. It restored some of the edge the plain 996 had lost to the older 916 SPS, with a higher-output engine and race-grade chassis parts. For 2000 it gained fully adjustable Öhlins forks with titanium-nitride coated stanchions, in addition to the Öhlins rear shock and lightweight Marchesini wheels. It is a stiffly sprung, demanding road bike with a dry clutch and a very committed riding position.
