The 998 replaced the 996 as the base Biposto superbike for 2002 and introduced the first Testastretta engine, giving about 11 hp more than the 996 and better low-rev response. The chassis stayed close to the 996, with the trellis frame, Showa forks and an Öhlins rear shock, but the bodywork was cleaner and lost the big side air intakes. It is a sharp-handling, stable machine with a tall first gear and heavy clutch that make town riding tiring.
