The 998R was the limited-production homologation special of the 998 range, built so that Ducati could race the second-generation Testastretta engine in World Superbike. It has a larger bore and shorter stroke than the other 998s for higher revs, bigger valves and stronger crankcases. It also got fully adjustable Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes, Marchesini wheels and carbon bodywork, making it the most track-focused 998.
