The 999 replaced the 998 in 2003 with a radical new design that put aerodynamics and mechanics ahead of styling. It brought a taller, wider fairing, a lightweight aluminium box-section swingarm, adjustable ergonomics (footrests, lever positions, steering rake) and an under-seat silencer, and it complied with Euro 2 emissions. The base model used Showa suspension and the 124 hp Testastretta twin.
