The Monster S4 put the liquid-cooled four-valve 916 superbike engine into the Monster's trellis frame, making it the fastest and best-equipped Monster of its day. It added fully adjustable Showa forks, a Sachs rear shock and Brembo four-piston brakes over the air-cooled models. Reviewers liked the strong engine but found the stock suspension settings and details such as the exposed water pump less impressive. A limited S4 Fogarty edition of 300 bikes also appeared in 2002.
