The Baja 100 was Harley-Davidson's answer to the late-1960s boom in small two-stroke trail bikes, built for it in Varese, Italy by its part-owned Aermacchi subsidiary. Its 98 cc single was a sleeved-down version of an existing Aermacchi two-stroke, mated to a five-speed box and a purpose-made frame. Factory-supported riders took class honours in the 1971 Baja 1000, but showroom bikes were criticised as tall, under-powered and roughly finished compared with the race machines.
