The MT500 started as the Italian SWM XN Tornado enduro and became the British Army's Rotax-powered military single when Armstrong-CCM built it in the 1980s. Harley-Davidson bought the design in 1987, badged it as its own and offered it to the US military as a modern successor to the WLA, but no big contract came. Only a small number of Harley MT500s were built; they kept the kickstart, drum brakes, jerry-can holders and waterproof rifle case of the military specification.
