The Softail Custom joined the range for 1986, taking the hardtail-look Softail frame of the 1984 FXST and dressing it with a narrow 21-inch spoked front wheel, solid disc rear wheel and belt final drive. The rubber-free, rigidly mounted 1340 Evolution engine gave strong low-down pull and a five-speed gearbox. Period testers liked the engine and shifting but found the single front disc weak and the feet-forward riding position tiring.
