The Fat Boy grew out of factory show bikes taken to Daytona Bike Week in 1988 and 1989 and went on sale as a 1990 model, quickly becoming one of Harley-Davidson's best sellers. Its look was built on solid-disc cast wheels front and rear, a wide FL front end, fat 16-inch tyres, shotgun-style exhausts and winged tank badges, over a Softail chassis whose hidden shocks imitate a hardtail. The first bikes were all silver; from 1991 a different colour was offered each year, and the exhaust was made seamless for 1994.
