Launched for 1986, the 1100 was the largest Sportster yet, using the new Evolution top end with alloy cylinders and heads, hydraulic tappets and a three-piece crank. It pulled strongly from low revs and ran a quicker quarter-mile than earlier Sportsters, though it still vibrated at cruising speeds and kept a four-speed chain-drive gearbox. After two seasons it gave way to the 1200.
