The base XL883 of 2000-2001 was the entry point to the Harley range: an 883 cc Evolution V-twin bolted solidly into the frame, a carburettor, belt drive, a 19-inch front wheel and the small peanut tank. It was cheap and well finished but the solid-mounted engine buzzed and testers found the stock tune lacklustre, which is why many owners went for the 1200 conversion kit.
