The last 883 cc XLCH years brought revised cylinder heads with straighter intake ports, safety-rim wheels and bigger mufflers. The traditional magneto gave way to battery-and-coil ignition with automatic advance, making the kick-only bike easier to start. Cycle World still called it the senior superbike of its day, quick over the quarter mile but thirsty from its tiny 2.25-gallon tank.
